Nell Gray, a family-owned and operated business, has been synonymous with uniforms for over seven decades.
Over that time, the company has evolved into a leading manufacturer within the textile and clothing industry, with key employees of Nell Gray establishing Uniform Concepts in 2007 after identifying a need for a retail solution for school uniforms.
Adapting to Changing Market Demands
In 2011, Tuan Nguyen acquired Nell Gray and Uniform Concepts. Since then, the two companies have expanded their reach even further, most recently beyond WA’s borders for the first time.
Some 170 schools and colleges are currently supplied with uniforms, and thanks to an innovative Total Apparel Management solution that the two companies offer clients, if you see somebody in a uniform, the chances are that Tuan and his team have supplied it.
A new owner-operated factory in Vietnam has further streamlined the supply of apparel and uniforms (including to WA Health employees). As of 2024, the company has expanded into South Australia, reaching interstate clients for the first time.
According to Eric Nguyen, IT Manager for Nell Gray, supplying uniforms over the years has required the team to navigate various challenges, including adaption to changing market demands and maintaining high-quality standards in an increasingly competitive industry.
The company’s commitment to product quality and customer service has resulted in an impressive client list. We supply uniforms for major government departments, high-profile public and private schools, and corporate accounts.

Nell Gray’s Point of Difference
There are eight retail superstores across Perth Metro and the southwest, a point of difference that has contributed to Nell Gray and Uniform Concepts’ success to date.
“Establishing our first retail superstore in Joondalup in 2014 was an industry first in Australia. That model has now been replicated successfully; Tuan is always asking the question – where to set up shop next. Our most recent store opening was in Port Kennedy, for instance.

The COVID-19 pandemic created its own challenges, particularly in terms of the supply chain with products created in Vietnam, as shipments from overseas and the cost of containers skyrocketed during the period.
Staffing was a challenge too, but as Nell Gray was the leading supplier of uniforms for WA Health, we were able to meet demands and remained resilient, providing WA’s frontline health carers with uniforms despite the COVID challenges.
At the height of the pandemic, 150,000 pieces were supplied – an amazing achievement, considering the items were produced offshore and delivered to WA in a timely manner. We pushed through, and I would like to congratulate our team in Vietnam, in particular, for keeping the supply chain going.

Future Plans for Expansion
Thanks to Tuan’s vision, the company is well placed to build further and continue its plans for expansion.
As of December 2024, over half a million garments are produced annually, ensuring 110,000 WA school students arrive at school smartly dressed in uniforms.
In addition, 50 public hospitals, health campuses and clinics are also clients of Nell Gray, and in recent years, the uniforms of Perth Children’s Hospital workers have been creatively reimagined by the team.
Tuan’s approach to continually assessing new opportunities to expand has inevitably required access to a considerable amount of capital to act nimbly on occasion to acquire retail property. That is where his relationship with business finance specialist Brad Spencer at Ledge Finance has proven invaluable.

The relationship with Ledge goes beyond business transactions, with Tuan regarding Brad as a close friend. They are always ready to assist, demonstrating integrity and honesty in every engagement.
Brad’s expertise in financing, refinancing, and structuring deals with banks and other financial institutions has been invaluable, allowing us to secure advantageous terms and expand our business confidently. Brad has also been an exceptional liaison with lenders, ensuring smooth interactions and strategic alignment.

Brad has worked with Tuan and the family for over 12 years and, during this time, has assisted and guided their funding requirements in terms of both business and personal needs.
The expansion of the Vietnamese operations and multiple property purchases for commercial and residential investments has required notable financial arrangements. It’s been a pleasure to work alongside Tuan to help the company reach its goals over the years.
